Tanzania, as a member of the East African Community (EAC) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), has integrated the common higher education system set out by IUCEA to enhance regional integration, quality assurance, and promote academic mobility. The TCU plays a central role in aligning Tanzanian higher education systems with the regional standards and frameworks. Some key elements that have been adopted include:
- Curriculum Harmonisation: Curriculum development framework is aligned with regional standards to ensure compatibility with member states. This facilitates academic consistency and mutual recognition of qualifications.
- Credit Accumulation and Transfer: Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) system is aligned with the East African Credit Transfer System (EACTS) in a manner that credits earned at Tanzanian universities and member states can be seamlessly transferred to institutions across the region, promoting student mobility.
- Quality Assurance and Accreditation: Quality Assurance Framework is aligned to the East African Higher Education Quality Assurance Framework (EAQFHE) in order to ensure that universities comply with regional accreditation requirements.
- Recognition of Qualifications: University Qualifications Framework (UQF) is aligned with the East African Qualifications Framework (EAQF), enabling mutual recognition of degrees and diplomas within the region, facilitating employment and academic progression across EAC countries and beyond.
- Academic and Research Collaboration: TCU promotes partnerships between Tanzanian universities and regional institutions to enhance faculty exchanges, research collaboration, and joint academic programmes.
- Student Mobility: Implementation of the common higher education system has enhanced student mobility in Tanzania and other EAC member states with the assurance that their credits will be recognised, thus increasing international exposure and fostering regional cooperation.
By adopting IUCEA’s common higher education system, Tanzania has aligned its higher education system with regional and African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF), which also enhance academic mobility, quality assurance, and international recognition of qualifications.
