A Pillar of Excellence: Hon. Lela Muhamed Mussa Applauds TCU’s Commitment to Quality University Education
The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Zanzibar, successfully hosted the Sixth Higher Education Week Exhibition from 14th to 20th July 2025 at Mnazi Mmoja Grounds in Unguja, Zanzibar. This annual event brought together over 80 higher education institutions and stakeholders from across Tanzania and beyond to celebrate achievements, strengthen partnerships, and explore new ideas for innovation in the sector. Since it began in 2020, the exhibition has grown into a key platform for knowledge sharing, showcasing institutional milestones, and building lasting collaborations in higher education.
The exhibition was officially opened on 17th July 2025 by the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Hon. Lela Muhamed Mussa. The ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including the Chairperson of the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), Dr. Leonard Akwilapo, and the Executive Secretary of TCU, Prof. Charles Kihampa. Their participation highlighted the Commission’s ongoing dedication to advancing inclusive, accessible, and quality university education in Tanzania.
In her opening remarks, Hon. Lela Muhamed Mussa applauded TCU for its strong commitment to maintaining the quality and integrity of higher education. She described the Commission as a pillar of excellence and a trusted regulatory body that continues to inspire confidence among students, institutions, and stakeholders. “TCU has consistently shown visionary leadership and a deep commitment to ensuring that university education in Tanzania meets international standards,” she said. The Minister also praised TCU’s active public engagement, support to emerging institutions, and its vital role in fostering international academic cooperation. She noted that the Commission’s presence at the exhibition reflected its openness, transparency, and mission to empower the next generation through quality education.
This year marked TCU’s sixth consecutive participation in the event. Throughout the week, the Commission actively engaged with visitors and stakeholders through its vibrant exhibition booth. Many attendees stopped by to seek information about university education opportunities and the legal and regulatory frameworks guiding higher learning institutions in Tanzania. Through brochures, one-on-one consultations, and interactive displays, TCU shared valuable insights into its roles, responsibilities, and the services it provides to students, parents, and institutions.
TCU’s involvement in the exhibition is part of fulfilling its legal mandate, particularly under Section 5(1)(j) of The Universities Act, Cap. 346, which empowers the Commission to promote the objectives of higher education and offer advisory and support services in the sector. The event offered an important platform to raise awareness about university education both locally and internationally and to clarify key areas such as admission procedures, quality assurance, and recognition of foreign qualifications.
As the exhibition drew to a close on 20th July 2025, it was widely celebrated as a resounding success, not only for its dynamic showcase of academic achievements and innovation but also for the meaningful connections it fostered among institutions, students, and the wider community. TCU concluded the event by reaffirming its commitment to working hand in hand with all stakeholders to strengthen the quality, relevance, and global competitiveness of higher education in Tanzania.
