TCU Strengthens Quality Teaching: Over 180 University Academics Equipped with Pedagogical Skills in National Capacity-Development Workshop

The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to elevating the quality of higher education by equipping university lecturers with essential pedagogical skills. Through a vibrant and impactful national capacity-development workshop, TCU empowered over 180 non-education academic staff from a wide spectrum of university institutions to refine their teaching approaches and deliver more engaging, learner-centred instruction.

Held from 26th to 28thNovember 2025 at Magadu Hotel, Mzinga Corporation in Morogoro, the workshop brought together 189 participants from both public and private universities. The programme served as a platform for cultivating innovative teaching methodologies, strengthening instructional expertise, and fostering an enriching academic environment across Tanzania’s higher education sector.

Officiating the training, the Executive Secretary of TCU, Prof. Charles Kihampa, underscored the Commission’s resolve to ensure that lecturers, regardless of their discipline, possess not only strong subject knowledge but also the pedagogical skills necessary to inspire and nurture their students. He highlighted that exceptional teaching extends beyond delivering content, it is about igniting curiosity, cultivating critical thought, and shaping minds for the future.

“Quality university education is not only determined by the depth of academic content but also by how that knowledge is delivered to inspire and empower students,” Prof. Kihampa remarked. He further affirmed that TCU will continue to champion initiatives that heighten academic excellence and strengthen the foundation of higher education in the country.

The workshop explored a range of transformative topics, including innovative teaching approaches, classroom management techniques, student-centred learning models, effective assessment strategies, and the strategic integration of digital tools in university teaching. Participants engaged enthusiastically in interactive sessions, group-based reflections, and hands-on exercises designed to encourage thoughtful and reflective pedagogical practice.

Several participants expressed their heartfelt appreciation to TCU, describing the experience as enlightening and professionally rejuvenating. Many observed that the training had reshaped their perspective on teaching, reinforcing the idea that meaningful learning depends not only on what is taught, but on how it is taught.

“This workshop has given us a new perspective on how to make our classes more engaging and impactful. It has reminded us that teaching is not only about delivering content but about inspiring curiosity and fostering critical thinking among students,” commented one participant.

This initiative forms part of TCU’s broader mission to fortify the quality of higher education by strengthening institutional capacity, enriching teaching practices, and upholding the highest standards of academic excellence. Through such efforts, TCU continues to nurture a highly competent, motivated, and pedagogically skilled academic community dedicated to advancing Tanzania’s educational aspirations.
